Best Books on Preaching

May 1, 2012 — 3 Comments

Not only do I love preaching and listening to preachers, but I also love to read books about preaching.  There are tons of incredible preachers, leaders, and writers who have a lot of valuable insight about the craft of preaching and a lot of books have really helped me as I’ve spent time learning how to be a better communicator of God’s word.  I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite books on preaching.  The books are a variety of styles ranging from the practical to theological in nature, but they all have had value for me as I’ve read and studied them.

My Favorite Books on Preaching

Communicating for a Change by Andy Stanley

Speaking to Teenagers: How to Think About, Create, and Deliver Effective Messages by Doug Fields and Duffy Robbins

Refining Your Style: Learning from Respected Communicators by Dave Stone

Law & Gospel by C.F.W. Walther

How to Speak to Youth…and Keep Them Awake at the Same Time by Ken Davis

Faithful Preaching: Declaring Scripture with Responsibility, Passion, and Authenticity by Tony Merida

The Supremacy of God in Preaching by John Piper

Between Two Worlds by John Stott

*the list is in order starting with my favorite of all preaching books

What would you add to the list?  I’m always looking for more preaching books.

  1. Biblical Preaching by Haddon Robinson

    • I’m assuming it’s good since you added it, what did you like about it?

      • Haddon Robinson is the Professor of Preaching at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. The book emphasizes the importance of expository messages and realizing what “The Big Idea” is in a message. I was assigned to read it as a text book when I took my Biblical Preaching classes in college. My Preaching Professor studied under Dr. Robinson at Gordon-Conwell. The book is amazing and I believe that anyone who preaches God’s Word (and their audiences) will benefit from reading it.
